Soapstone Countertops

Soapstone is quickly becoming a popular option for kitchen countertops because of its soft feel and ability to patina with use and time. The soft feel of soapstone comes from the abundance of mineral talc leading to an almost soap-like feel to it, hence the name. Due to it being a natural product, soapstone may vary in color and pattern from the sample and may have natural variations. These characteristics enhance the natural beauty of the stone and do not impair its durability.

Backsplashes

Our backsplashes are standard at 4” high. Any height backsplash can be done with a minimum of 3” to full height backsplash, eliminating the need for tile. Backsplashes are installed using a 90˚ butt joint where the backsplash rests on top of the counter, along the wall. Because soapstone is a natural stone we cannot make coved backsplashes as seen with laminate tops.

Soapstone

Soapstone is a relatively soft stone that is susceptible to scratching. Using cutting boards with knives and avoiding abrasive cleaners will help reduce the potential for scratching. If scratches do occur, they can be buffed with fine grit sandpaper and touched up with mineral oil. The scratches can also be left to become part of the stone and add to the beauty and enhanced patina common with soapstone.

Hot pots can be set directly on the soapstone countertops without worry of causing a crack or burn mark. This is because of soapstone’s high density and its ability to absorb, store, and evenly distribute the heat without altering the composition of the stone. Because soapstone will remain hot to the touch for some time afterwards, we do still recommend using a trivet or hot
pad.

Soapstone will not typically react to household cleaners or spills of acidic or alkaline liquids. It is one of few natural minerals that will not absorb stains as other natural stone products do. Soapstone will temporarily discolor when a liquid makes contact with the surface, but in most cases should evaporate leaving no stain behind.

Soapstone’s natural color can be treated and enhanced with mineral oil to create the darker, richer color that many homeowners prefer. If you choose not to use mineral oil to darken your countertop, it will darken over time creating a natural patina, especially in areas of frequent use.

Soapstone requires regular oiling to maintain its maximum beauty and help keep a consistent color throughout. Using mineral or linseed oil will also help ward-off scratches. To apply mineral or linseed oil, simply wipe over the entire countertop surface then wipe with a clean cloth. Use the following schedule for applying mineral or linseed oil:

  • Week 1: two applications.
  • Weeks 2 through 4: one application per week.
  • Weeks 5 through 9: one application per two weeks.
  • Apply monthly up to 18 months.

As time passes you will need to oil the countertops less frequently, noticing that the deep color will last between applications. Oiling the countertop at least twice per year is recommended after the initial 18 month period of care.
